Head Lice Treatment

Head Lice

Head lice do not jump or fly. It is a good idea to check your child’s head every week. The louse is a small black bug. The areas of the head to watch closely are the back of the neck and above the ears. The hair is thicker in those areas and the lice prefer those places. The lice leave eggs or nits on the hair shaft. They look like dandruff but must be picked off.

Without treatment, these eggs do hatch into live bugs. As far as treatment for live bugs, there are several different over-the-counter products. The directions must be followed exactly. The treatment kills the bugs and the nits or eggs must be picked off. Along with treating the child’s head, bedding must be washed in hot water and all surfaces must be vacuumed. Stuffed animals that are not washable can be sealed in a plastic bag.

Children should be encouraged not to share brushes, combs or scrunchies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your health room attendant or school nurse. Remember, head lice is not a health condition but it is a nuisance condition.
